5-7 Multi-Sport Lessons

EQUIPMENT
1 soccer ball per child

TIME
~5 min

STORYLINE
Today we are Warming Up before our games. Your goal is to follow the Coach and listen to instructions.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Run from baseline to end line forwards like a cheetah 
  • Run from baseline to end line side shuffles like a crab
  • Run from baseline to end line backwards like a bear 
  • Then with soccer balls practicing dribbling, dribble your ball to the other side of the field and back (repeat 3x)
  • Back to dots and add high knees, toe touches and jumping jacks or other active movements to warm-up
  • Talk about offense vs. defense and demonstrate what that means by choosing two children to show the group with.

2 short cones

Time
~ 7 min

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Round About. Your goal is to be the first person to get the soccer ball first and score a goal. The person who does not have the ball, will be the defender. 

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide you into two teams. 
  • Before the game begins, line up single file behind your team's marker cone.
  • When I say, "GO!" the first person will race around their team's goal and receive a pass from me.
  • The person who gets the ball first will play offense while the other person plays defense.
  • We will begin a new round when an offender scores or a defender kicks the ball out-of-bounds. 

TEACHING TIPS
Approach:
Remind children to hustle back when they are on defense. 
Discussion: Ask students to share who they saw working hard to protect the goal.

Time
~ 7 min

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Long Shot. Your goal is get a pass from your partner and then dribble to shoot in the goal. 

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide you into pairs. 
  • Before the game begins, line up single file behind your group's marker cone.
  • The first person in line will start with the ball.   
  • When I say, "GO!" dribble to the first cone and pass to your partner down the field. 
  • Your partner should be open down the field ready to receive the ball.
  • When your partner receives the ball, he or she should dribble to take a shot. 
  • Once everyone has shot, we will switch sides so everyone gets a chance to shoot and pass. 
  • Play several 2-3 rounds.
  • Round 3: Split kids up into groups of three. Two people pass and shoot and one defender.

TEACHING TIPS
Approach:
Remind children to keep their heads up while dribbling to avoid bumping into others. 
Approach: Remind students the closer they keep their ball to their body, the less chance it has to be stolen during Game 3.

TIME
30 min

STORYLINE
Today we are playing a Coach Lead Scrimmage with no goalies. Your goal is to shoot a soccer ball into the opposing team’s goal.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide you into two teams –using pinnies to tell who you are.
  • Before the game begins, spread out on your side of the field.
  • I will decide which team starts with the ball first.
  • When I say, “GO!” the team with the ball will start.
  • You cannot touch the ball with your hands, you can only kick the ball.
  • There are no goalies, you must stand 3 – 5 feet away from your goal when defending.
  • If a goal is scored, go back to your team’s side and we will begin a new round.
  • If I blow my whistle at any point, freeze where you are.
