5-7 Multi-Sport Games

None
STORYLINE
Today we are Warming Up before our games. Your goal is to follow the Coach and listen to the instructions.
INSTRUCTIONS
- When I say, “GO!” run in the different animal movements from the baseline to the end line.
- Run like a turtle (run slowly and put your arms behind your back)
- Run like a cheetah (run as fast as you can)
- Run like a giraffe (put your arms together above your head to make a long neck)
- Run like an elephant (put your arm out in front of your body to make a trunk)
- Run like a penguin(put your arms out to the sideand waddle)
- Run like a dog
- Swim like a fish (use your arms to swim)
- Duck walk (squat and waddle like a duck)
- Bear crawl
- Hop like a bunny
- Leap like a frog
EQUIPMENT
1 fuzzy ball per child
STORYLINE
Today we are going to learn how to throw overhand. First, I will demonstrate, then we will practice together.
INSTRUCTIONS
- Say, “I’m going to demonstrate in slow motion by giving you the steps.” Then, walk kids through the steps allowing them to practice each step with you and then all the way through.
- Hold your ball in your throwing arm. As your throwing arm swings, bring the ball to head level.
- Rotate your body slightly towards your throwing side.
- The foot on the same side as your throwing arm, steps forward.
- During the throw, the arms swings high over the shoulder with the body leaning forward.
- The throwing arm reaches forward and downward after the ball is let go.
- Hold your ball in your throwing arm. As your throwing arm swings, bring the ball to head level.
- Before the game begins, line up shoulder-to-shoulder on the baseline.
- When I say, “GO!” throw your baseball as far as you can.
- After everyone has thrown, you may retrieve your ball and head back to the baseline.
- We will practice a few times before the next game
VARIATIONS
- Play as indicated above.
TEACHING TIPS
- Remind children everyone will be throwing their ball at the same time.
- Remind children they cannot get their ball until everyone has thrown.
- Remind children to be aware of the other balls being thrown around them

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Snowball Alley. In this game, the objective is to get to your workshop without getting hit by a snowball from the Grinch (thrower).
INSTRUCTIONS
- Before the game begins, line up on the baseline shoulder-to-shoulder.
- I will begin as the Grinch. The Grinch cannot throw any snowballs past the boundary cones and cannot enter the alley to retrieve balls during a round.
- When I say, “GO!” run to the workshop without getting hit by a snowball.
- If you get to the cabin without getting hit, you are safe for the next round.
- If you get hit with a snowball from the shoulders or below or go out-of-bounds, you become a Grinch the next round.
- We will begin a new game when there is one elf left.
VARIATIONS
- Play as indicated above. Elves can have a “Three life Rule”. They can be hit up to three times before becoming an elf.
- Elves become Grinches after one hit.
- Divide students into two teams – elves and Grinches. Switch roles after each game.
TEACHING TIPS
- If elves are staying too long at one end of the alley, consider using a 10-second countdown.
- If Grinches are arguing over elves being hit or not, consider adding a ‘throwers choice rule’ or Ro Sham Bo.

STORYLINE
Today we are going to learn how to catch. First, I will demonstrate, then we will practice together.
INSTRUCTIONS
- Say, “I’m going to demonstrate in slow motion by giving you the steps.” Then, ask a responsible child to help you and walk kids through the steps.
- Catching above waist- Arms out in front, ready to catch
- Put your hands above your waist with fingers up, “like a diamond in the sky.”
- Catching below waist- fingers down, hands by waist, ready to catch.
- Split the group into pairs and have kids throw and catch with one another 4-5 times.
- Before the practice begins, you must line up face to face with your teammate.
- When I say, “Start” begin gently toss the ball across to your teammate.
- When I say, “Stop!” freeze and hold on the ball.
- Try other variations once they have practiced a little.
VARIATIONS
- Pass normally.
- Increase the distance every catch.
- Have the children form a circle and throw it between each other.
TEACHING TIPS
- Demonstrate how to catch and pass to the children.
- Remind children to gently pass it.
- Have them call out each other’s name to make sure they are ready.

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Infield Grounder. Your goal is to field a grounder to your partner. Once your partner catches the ball, he or she must run to base.
INSTRUCTIONS
- Before the game begins, assign one person from the partnership to go out into the infield.
- When I say, "GO!" one partner with stand on a dot near home base and throw a grounder to his or her partner.
- If you are the person catching and have caught a ground ball, step on the base closest to you.
- After you have stepped on the base, put the ball back in the hula-hoop and go back into the infield.
- Play four rounds before switching throwers and catchers.
TEACHING TIPS
Approach: Remind children they must be aware of others when catching a ground ball.
EQUIPMENT

STORYLINE
We are now going to learn how to swing a bat. Your goal is to practice your swing on a set of dots. First, I will demonstrate, then we will practice together.
INSTRUCTIONS
- Say, “I’m going to demonstrate in slow motion by giving you the steps.” Then, walk kids through the steps allowing them to practice each step with you and then all the way through.
- Hold your bat on your dots with your knees bent and legs apart.
- Rotate your body to get ready to swing with your elbow up.
- As you swing, bring your body facing forward.
- Ask kids to stand on their dots and practice the steps.
VARIATIONS
- Play as indicated above.

- Supervise and demonstrate when necessary.
EQUIPMENT

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Moon Rocks. You are astronauts in outer space and have to hit the moon rock into the alien spaceships that are attacking you.
INSTRUCTIONS
- Demonstrate the game first by choosing a child to show the game with.
- Assign each child a partner. One person should be holding the bat (foam noodle) and the other holding the moon rock (beach volleyball). They should be spread out about 4 feet.
- Each person will get a turn being the astronaut hitting the moon rock.
- The moon rock thrower will stand several feet away and overhand or underhand throw the moon rock to the astronaut.
- Give each person 5 turns before they switch

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Fly Ball. Your goal is to hit a ball off a tee and catch fuzzy balls while in the outfit.
INSTRUCTIONS
- I will select the first person to be the batter.
- Everyone else will spread out onto the outfield.
- When I say, "GO!" the batter will try hitting the ball off of the tee.
- Once you have batted, an outfielder will retrieve your ball and put it back in the hula-hoop.
- We will begin a new game once I select a new batter.
TEACHING TIPS
Approach: Help children bat by placing your hands on top of theirs while swinging.
Approach: It is up to the Coach's discretion to use a tee or underhand pitch to the batter.
Safety: Remind children to not throw the bat once they are done batting.

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Home Base. Your goal is to run a complete home run around all the bases.
INSTRUCTIONS
- Before the game begins, line up shoulder-to-shoulder on the baseline.
- I will select the first person to begin as the batter.
- Everyone else will be runners.
- When I say, “GO!” the batter will hit a beach ball off the tee.
- When the ball has been hit, everyone will follow the batter and run to as many bases as possible.
- When Coach retrieves the ball and says, “FREEZE!” you must stop at the nearest base you are at.
- We will begin a new game once a new batter is selected.
VARIATIONS
- Try without the tee!
TEACHING TIPS
- Have the Coach bat first as a practice run for everyone.
